Spring 2015

Welcome to the 2015 season of Westborough Softball!

We are thrilled to share this inaugural newsletter with you - parents, players, volunteers, and coaches alike. The primary goal of this publication is to provide insights, highlights, and news from around our league. We also hope to unite our community - through our shared interest in athleticism, teamwork, character building, and commitment to our kids. Please feel free to share ideas for future topics; we would love to hear from you!

Westborough Softball is - and will continue to be - a league based on the foundation that the sport should be fun for the kids. For evidence, check out this fun video from the final game of 2014 Fall Ball. Nothing better than a softball player with a GoPro on her helmet! Special thanks to Coaches Jeff Reed and Chip Lattanzio for putting this together.

This is, of course, a competitive league and everyone enjoys winning. Yet we believe there are longer lasting, healthier benefits to having our players be immersed in a fun, engaging sports environment than simply "win at all costs." Read this fabulous story about an example of outstanding sportsmanship between the Central Washington and Western Oregon Division II NCAA Girls Softball Tournament, or watch these two inspiring videos (video 1 and video 2).

A few reminders: the Softball calendar year includes Fall Ball through Spring Ball, and includes earning spots on Summer All-Stars and Tournaments. For AAA divisions and above, Fall Ball is less competitive and includes a stronger emphasis on instruction, skill development, and opportunities to try new positions. Our Spring season includes increased competition with goals such as making the playoffs, earning spots on All-Star teams, and playing in various Tournaments. No matter what the season, our league focuses on fun along the way!

We are so happy our spring season is off to a good start. Practices and games teach our daughters skills, strategies, teamwork, and outstanding sportsmanship. Softball creates lasting friendships!

Player development happens off the field, as well. We know that off-season clinics and training can make a big difference for our players. Our league has been working diligently to create a comprehensive player development program for both players and coaches.

By partnering with Metro West Sportscenter, Assumption College, and WHS' Greg Rota, we are able to provide countless learning opportunities for our players. We look forward to having  designated Player Development assistant coaches as part of our each team's coaching staff starting this season.

Of equal importance: the help given by our coaches and volunteers. The many who help us deliver an outstanding Westborough Softball experience need resources to help them become even better coaches and volunteers. As such, we are happy to report that we have partnered with the Positive Coaches Alliance (PCA) to provide training for our coaches in early April.

As stated in the PCA mission, we want to help develop "Better Athletes, Better People" by working to provide athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. If you are interested in volunteering in our league, please let us know.

A huge thank you to the Westborough Softball Board and all our volunteers for everything you do!

None of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our local business sponsors. A huge shout out goes to our supportive sponsor community. Their continued support - and heartfelt concern for our league, community, and kids - is truly appreciated. If you or your organization would like to sponsor our league, we would love to hear from you.

Last - but certainly not least - you may have noticed that we have a new league logo! We also have a new slogan: "Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Together!"

Our fresh look and slogan help embody who we are - and what we do as a league. We are in this together. We are your community. We are your Westborough Softball.
